How to germinate strelitzia seeds

This plant’s seeds (the plant is also known as bird of paradise) are quite easy to germinate under the right conditions. Here are the steps you can follow to successfully germinate Strelitzia seeds:

  1. Soak the seeds in warm water for 24-48 hours. This helps soften the hard outer shell of the seed which will increase the chances of germination.
  2. Fill a medium-sized container with well-draining potting soil. The soil should be moist but not too wet. You can also add a layer of course sand or stone at the bottom of the container to aid drainage.
  3. Plant the seeds about 2cm deep in the soil. Strelitzias need warmth to germinate so you need to place the container in a warm spot or alternatively you can use a heat pad to help with the process.
  4. Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Use a spray bottle to gently water in the beginning.

The strelitzia seeds should germinate in about 4-6 weeks. Once the seedlings are about 5cm tall, you can transplant them into larger pots or into the ground bearing in mind strelitzia prefer sun and well-draining soil. Strelitzia will add a gorgeous tropical feel to your garden and are generally quite hardy plants that last for a fairly long time. Good luck and happy growing!
